Here’s the routine:
Around 8 of the clock, Jonah starts to get a bit sleepy. And when I say sleepy, I mean cranky. And when I say cranky, I mean fussy. It’s time for bed.
What ‘bed’ means is this: Rachel volunteers her body—yet again—to dive upon the grenade and feed the little beast to sleep. He snacks. He snoozes. He snacks. He sleeps. Around 9 or 9:30, his slumber is durable enough to withstand a move. The move. The move to the bassinet.
This is a tricky prospect. I mean, it’s like 5 feet, but doing it correctly is the difference between a couple hours sleep for Rachel (on her belly no less…a prized privilege) or another feeding. Or—WORSE!—playing Daddy-o Kart where we walk and walk and walk and walk and walk laps around the house to try and get him back to sleep. Again. And again. And sometimes even, again.
So anyway. The transfer. It usually happens face-down. Jonah does not really abide lying on his back. Which, anybody who’s Kaiser-educated will tell you, is totally bad. Bad Juju. So bad, that I’m a bit hesitant to write this. But! He’s a baby and he sleeps on his tummy. What. That’s what it is.
Well, to make a long story a tiny bit less long, last night he wasn’t having none of it. None. And Rachel and I were sort of losing our minds. So, we reached allllllllllll the way back to forever ago…like, 6 weeks ago. It seems like prehistory. But, back in February-land, we used to swaddle him, and I got it to where I could wrap him super-tight. Like, painfully tight. SO I tried it last night.
And it worked. Put him right out. Maybe it was due to lack of oxygen. I don’t know.
But, I guess, the moral is that he slept on his back for a while. And looked cute in his little jelly roll.
This is the type of thing I write about now.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that Rachel and I are more or less addicted to the mixtape. The idea of the mixtape. Or, mix CD. Or digital mix. The mix. As it were.
Mixing songs together that maybe do or maybe don’t stick to a common theme and/or communicate our feelings for each other to each other, our feelings together to everybody else, or well, our favorite songs or something. Or something.
We fell in love while making mix CDs for each other. It’s sort of a thing we do together.
And so, obviously, we’ve got a mix that we put together to commemorate the arrival of our child. Our only child. Our first child. Jonah. As a matter of fact, Jonah is only about 2 months old at the time of writing this, but most of the tracklisting of this mix is a few years old. We have been talking about it longer than we’ve been talking about baby names. Longer than we’ve been talking about actually HAVING a baby. So yeah. Classic us. I’m sure none of you are surprised.
Anyway. It’s the future. We are living in the future. It’s very possible—likely, even—that if you’re reading this, you may or may not listen to CDs at all…it might be all digital all the way. So, in the interest of that, we figured we’d give you a link to download the compilation and listen to it on your computer or iDevice or whatever. For fun. For convenience.
We also wanted to give you the full tracklist after the jump here (that’s ‘blog’ for “please click on the ‘Continue Reading’ link”) and then, once I get into that, I probably won’t be able to help myself from writing something about a few/each of the songs. Because I like to hear myself type.
And so, without further ado, we happily present this mix to you. It’s been our soundtrack of late.
Click through for some extra sappy ruminations and of course, a full listing of what you’re downloading.
